The Commandant has made it clear that, for reasons of safety, jewelry including rings, wristwatches, and necklaces may NOT be worn by crew engaged in towing or other deck evolutions. Jewelry is discouraged for ALL crew except for a watch worn by the coxswain. Annual Maintenance RequirementsThe traditional five tasks required for annual maintenance have been abolished. Both Crew and Coxswains are required to have 12 hours on the water annually, up from 8. However, Coxswains may accrue the required hours either as coxswain or crew. GAR Model (Green-Amber-Red) As part of getting underway, Coxswains must consult with their crew and assess the risk of the mission in each of six areas. The result of this formal assessment is reported to the controlling authority (Station or Sector) before commencing the mission. A form is being made available. In addition to the initial (8-hour) and 5-year (4-hour) TCT sessions, there will be a new 1-hour training required annually. A PowerPoint presentation will be distributed in the next few months for inclusion in Flotilla training. The frequency of QE examinations is increased from every five years to every three. The tasks to be examined may be found on the District website for Crew, Coxswain, and PWC Operator Effective immediately, a candidate for Crew, Coxswain, or PWC may have more than one Mentor helping him/her prepare. Mentors must be trained by a QE in a special, short class and must be qualified at or above the level they are mentoring. That is, to mentor a Crew candidate, one must be Crew or Coxswain qualified. Boat Owners and Coxswains planning a mission and needing crew may contact Bob (Wally) Waldron, FSO-OP. Wally will maintain a list of qualified members and the dates/times they are available. You may call Wally via e-mail at goldcoast@pipeline.com |
